Storm’s River

A visit to Storm’s River mouth is like unwrapping a present. Driving down the winding road into the park, surrounded by indigenous forest on either side, you can hear the crashing waves and smell the sea. Suddenly, there is a break in the trees and there it is – the crystal blue ocean rolling as far as your eyes can see.

The suspension bridge makes for thrilling sight seeing

On this downhill trip, you might see a darling Blue Duiker (buck) darting across the road or a Dassie (Rock Hyrax) sunning on a rock. But the best part is at the end of the road – the stunning Storm’s River Mouth. The water is often a cobalt blue not that common in South Africa and the waters are teeming with marine life.

There are a variety of activities to be enjoyed from the mouth: nature walks, hikes to waterfalls and the famous suspension bridge. There is also snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking and a “lilo” adventure in the Storm’s River Gorge. As a National Park and Nature Reserve there really is so much to see and do and the animal encounters are surprising and genuine.

Cape Clawless Otter

Cape clawless otter – cute, inquisitive, furry, playful and clawless – but not a pet

On our last visit there we spotted dolphins swimming past and the very shy Cape Clawless Otter, frolicking in the water. We were also treated to a family of Dassies enjoying the picnic tables! The indigenous forest is untouched by man and runs over the rocky cliffs right down to the water’s edge. Storm’s River is one of our favourite spots and a definite day trip suggestion from Milkwood Manor!
